The last time I blogged about the films that I fancied watching this year it was 2011. I mentioned The King’s Speech and Never Let Me Go — both of which I loved — and another film that I now can’t even bring myself to name. What was I thinking? Why didn’t I just go for something like The Adjustment Bureau?
Since then, other potential highlights were to include Prometheus in 2012 and then Elysium in 2013. I came away from Prometheus rather confused and a little disappointed. Elysium went fairly well, it looked nice, though it was no District 9. I guess I also enjoyed Hobbit parts 1 & 2 though I wanted less rabbit-sledding and rather more troll purse singing. A few “Attercop!” outbursts would have been a bonus.
Unlike the rest of humanity I still haven’t seen Gravity. I love my science so I’m a little nervous about this one, though it certainly looks spectacular.
So here are the three films that I’m looking forward to in 2014 . . .
Gritty scenery, a sprinkling of British actors, class struggle, violence, snow. Ticks all the boxes! This film was initially released in South Korea way back in August 2013. Since then it’s only seen an October 2013 release in France. Japan and UK should see it ‘soon’. In the US it’s bogged down over cuts and voice-overs. Stop the wrangling, leave it as-is, slap on some region-specific subtitles and get it out there! Here’s the trailer . . .
The Raid 2: Berandal
I thought The Raid was sublime. If the sequel is halfway as decent we’re in for a treat. US release in March. Not sure about the UK yet. NSFW trailer . . .
Films I’m less sure about . . .
Well, Hobbit part 3 has to be done, just to complete the set. Transcendance looks a bit Lawnmower Man to me but I’m a sucker for a story with an AI. Good to see Cillian Murphy getting some screen time. Fingers crossed this isn’t just another Skynet story.
I think I’ll wait for Robocop on DVD. But what do I know? I thought Dredd was kinda so-so, but a lot of other people liked it. Then there’s a bunch of other good stuff coming along such as the Sin City sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy, and we have that Captain America chap.
That’s a lot of popcorn.
What are you looking forward to? What do you think about my dodgy choices?
