The Ever-Burning Torches

Last year I received an unusual Facebook message asking me to contact Ian Thomson about my RuneQuest scenario The Ever-Burning Torches published in the magazine Tradetalk. I had no memory of any such scenario!

Searching my loft I found the original paper copy of The Ever-Burning Torches and my memory was jogged. I’d written this for my roleplaying group back in the 1990s! It apparently appeared in Tradetalk issue #17 in 2009.

Ian was looking to republish The Ever-Burning Torches with others in a new publication, now available…

The Strangers in Prax Companion

Ever-Burning Torches was part of a RuneQuest campaign I had been running which started in Apple Lane, as many do, and wandered through Sartar, across Sun County, and into Pavis. I ran various published and self-penned scenarios in a suitably chaotic order. One scenario was Barran the Monster Killer, from the 1994 sourcebook Strangers in Prax, which included a suggestion for a sequel which I decided to write as The Ever-Burning Torches. I ran this scenario for my group sometime after 1994, but I can’t remember the exact year!

I’d like to give a shout-out for my old roleplaying buddies, Phill, Matt and Paul, as well as Claire who joined us for this scenario. That makes you all play-testers, thank you!

I also want to mention Jo who briefly joined the RuneQuest campaign, playing Claire’s character when Claire wasn’t available. I first met Jo at Claire’s 21st birthday party–in 1994, as it happens–where I made way too much Monkey Gland cocktail after misreading the recipe. Jo and I subsequently joined Phill’s Shadowrun campaign as players. Phill and Claire are married. I married Jo. We all settled down (kinda!) and had kids. A lot has happened in the last 30 years!

My contributor copy of The Strangers in Prax Companion arrived a few days ago and it looks amazing both inside and out. You can grab a copy via the link in this paragraph.

Happy RuneQuesting!
